Chicago dad facing charges after son’s accidental gun death

A Chicago dad with an illegally obtained gun is facing charges after one of his son’s killed the other accidentally with the weapon.

CNN reports that shootings like this are rare. Children are nineteen times more likely to die in a car accident, and at least nine times more likely to drown, than to be accidentally shot, federal statistics report.

The boys’ father, Michael Santiago is being charged with felony child endangerment, following the accidental shooting of his three-year-old son by his six-year-old son, during a game of “Cops & Robbers”.

Chicago Police report that the loaded gun was wrapped in pajama pants and stored on top of a refrigerator. The father was at work at the time of the shooting. Their mother was out at the store. The two boys were under the care of their grandfather, who lives upstairs. He had sent the boys downstairs to get something from the kitchen to clean up after their dog.

The grandfather heard the gunshot, and the boy said that someone had shot his brother. The three year old died at the hospital, after the shooting.

Santiago is a former gang member, and illegally purchased the gun used in the shooting, police say. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond.

The grandfather said, after the shooting, that there is no safe place you can put a gun where a child will not find it.

In the case of Santiago’s child endangerment charges, prosecutors will have to prove that Santiago knowingly put his children in a situation that would result in their harm.
