Whataburger employee fired for refusing to serve police

A Whataburger employee in Texas was fired Wednesday for refusing to serve two police officers.

Fox News reports that two officers stopped at a Lewisville Whataburger location, after working off-duty security at a construction site, early Wednesday morning. The officers were told by the employee upon approaching the counter that “We don’t serve police officers.”

The officers left, instead dining at a Dairy Queen. Whataburger quickly made a statement about the situation. “We were appalled to hear of an employee refusing service to two officers, as we have proudly served first responders across our system for decades,” the statement said. “As soon as we heard of this isolated incident, we began our own internal investigation overnight. The employee that refused service is no longer employed with Whataburger.” The officers have been invited back to the restaurant, to receive an apology in person.

One of the officers, Michael Magovern, told Fox, “17 years as a firefighter and now 13 years as a police officer this is the first time this has ever happened to me.”
