The New Jersey woman depicted in an iconic photo taken after the September 11th, 2001 terror attacks in Manhattan has died.
Marcy Borders, 42, was suffering from stomach cancer, according to her daughter as reported by the Associated Press.
Borders was working on the 81st floor inside one of the World Trade Center towers when the first plane struck, but she was able to escape. She was pulled into another building’s lobby by a stranger as the north tower collapsed, and a photographer with AFP captured the now-iconic photo of her covered in dust.
Borders said the experience led to a battle with depression that led to excessive alcohol and drug use, for which she entered treatment in 2011 and claimed to have been clean ever since.
Borders was diagnosed with stomach cancer in August 2014, and wondered whether it was related to the terror attacks.
