NASA officials will hand over the KSC – Kennedy Space Center – shuttle landing strip to Space Florida for the next 30 years.
Space Florida is a government agency created to expand the space industry and will use the landing strip as a testing ground for new companies and technologies.
The formal handing over will take place on 22nd June 2015. Financial terms have not been disclosed yet.
The three mile long runway has up till now been used for satellite deliveries , race car tests and other purposes since the last space shuttle returned to Earth in July 2011.
The facility opened u in 1976 and is located 2 miles north of KSC’s Vehicle Assembly Building.
Announcing the deal at the Paris Air Show, Florida Governor Rick Scott said that with this agreement Florida will be gaining access to unrestricted air space and one of the longest runways of the world, providing competitive advantage over any other state.
According to estimations of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, the Space Florida’s operation of the runway will create more than 200 new jobs over six years in Brevard County.
