The skin condition known as psoriasis may just be down for the count, thanks to a new kind of “miracle” cure.
Though the skin condition isn’t al to common, it affects about 3% of Brits and also affects some prominent celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevigne and Alan Carr
Psoriasis itself is caused by an excess of skin cells manifesting as bumps or “plaques.” This may not seem like much of a problem, but these plaques can get itchy, scaly, or flaky depending on the kind of psoriasis.
While people can deal with the physical effect, the problem becomes worse if the bumps are on visible skin. The social stigma of having a disease that affects the social perception of an individual is debilitating at worst, and embarrassing at best.
The new drug, known as ixekizumab, was tested at the University of Manchester. The results indicated that the treatment is a savior for people suffering from this sickness, as trials for the drug have revealed that 40% of participants had total relief while 90% experienced an improvement in their condition.
According to research team leader Chris Griffiths “What we saw in this trial was not just the physical aspects of the disease clearing up, but people on the new drug also reporting a marked improvement in their quality of life as they felt more confident and suffered less from itching – far more than in the other two groups.”
