Gunshot found in TMT door, police are investigating

The Subaru Telescope close to the hotly fought over Thirty Meter Telescope project is being examined by Big Island law and order officers after a suspected bullet hole was discovered in one of its doors.

Subaru Telescope executive Nobuo Arimoto said in an announcement last Sunday that the office was secured after a 9-millimeter bullet hole was found Saturday. Workers are looking out for abnormal activity, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported (http://bit.ly/1KR0ZIz).

“The Mauna Kea Hui was shocked to hear that a firearm was discharged in the heavenly realms of Mauna Kea, since all firearms are prohibited on Mauna Kea under our own protocol and especially under the Kapu Aloha,” Pisciotta said.

Group spokesperson Kealoha Pisciotta says she’s disappointed by the shooting

“The Mauna Kea Hui was shocked to hear that a firearm was discharged in the heavenly realms of Mauna Kea, since all firearms are prohibited on Mauna Kea under our own protocol and especially under the Kapu Aloha,” Pisciotta said.

UCLA astronomer Mark Morris was giving a guided lecture through the telescope facility when he saw the slug on the door.

“The veneer of civility on the TMT issue seems to be dissipating,” he said in an email to colleagues.

The Subaru Telescope is one of 13 similar telescopes close to the Thirty Meter Telescope development site, where work was stopped almost two months ago due to Mauna Kea Hui demonstrations.

The resumption of work has yet to be announced by organizers

The police is requesting anybody with pertinent information to report it away.
