Some people can’t walk after 70, some retire at 60, and then there are some that push their limits even at 92. Harriette Thompson, a 92 year old cancer survivor no less, is going to compete in San Dioego’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon this Sunday.
This is by no means the first time Thompson will run though. She’s ran the same marathon 15 times and even set the record last year when she finished it in 7 hours, 7 minutes, and 42 seconds, beating the records for people aged 90 and above by about an hour and a half.
That’s not all she’s achieved though. Thompson has beaten cancer not once, but twice; lost her husband, and then suffered an infection in her leg while training for this year’s race. She’s also a classical pianist, and played three times at Carnegie Hall. She says she plays piano pies in her head to prepare herself for her race.
According to Thompson “I just don’t think of myself being that unusual.” “I have a lot of people saying what an inspiration I am. That’s nice to hear, good for something at this age.”
The previous record older for oldest women was 92 year old Gladys Burrill who was 92 years, 19 days old for the 2010 Honolulu Marathon. Race organizers says Thompson will be 92 years, 65 days old this coming Sunday.
