American Idol contestant Rayvon Owen had judge JLo in tears after singing Believe

“A cat with nine lives,” was how judge JLo describes American Idol’s Rayvon Owen singing.

Owen is one of 2 contestants in jeopardy of being sent home, in the past 4 episodes,  but week by week he managed to stay on board and  during last Wednesday’s episode, he survive yet another week.

In a PEOPLE interview after being voted in the Top 4 over Tyanna Jones he said,  “I have had a hard road throughout this competition and have just been scraping by.  It’s bittersweet because I love Tyanna, but I am so excited and so relieved that I get to perform again next week.”

But 23 year old Owen  went on to prove why he was worth saving when he belted out his rendition of Lady Antebellum‘s “Need You Now.”

After a soulful rendition of the country song, judge Keith Urban told Owen, “I love when anybody takes a song and makes it their own. I give you props for that.”

Even judge Harry Connick Jr., who was recently featured at the center of an Idol drama, was feeling Owen’s soulful performance.

“I thought it was really strong. There are lots of great music in the world, but nothing substitutes an earnest young man, like yourself, looking out to whatever you think about and singing a beautiful ballad.  I thought you sang your pants off,” the native from Richmond, Virginia, was informed by Connick Jr.

Owen finished off his stellar performance rendering a song by Justin Bieber “Believe,” which had Lopez and his mother teary eyed.

“I’m so glad I got to share that moment with my mom. She’s sacrificed so much for me and I wanted to honor her on such a huge podium,” Owen said.
