Before the NBA playoffs started on Saturday, the Cleveland media questioned Van Gundy earlier this week about the Cavs’ chances.
Stan Van Gundy’s opinion is in highly requested, because he’s fairly acquainted with playoff basketball.
Before leading the Pistons to a 32-50 record this season, Van Gundy was a perfect 7-for-7 in making the playoffs in previous stints with the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic. The background includes leading the Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals.
Van Gundy has a brighter view for the Cavs, with LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and two key trades during the season to bolster depth.
He said, “I think they can play about any lineup, any style. There’s really nothing they can’t handle. You play big, they’re big enough to play you in there. They’ve got three big they play in their rotation. If you want to go small, obviously James gives you all the versatility you need.”
He added that James can guard any position, so they don’t have any problem trimming with people.
In a season that has produced top seeds (Atlanta, Golden State) that aren’t exactly NBA royalty, the Cavs will emerge to win the title and James will give the city of Cleveland the championship it desperately long for.
Considering that Cavs were once 19-20, it would be a shocking improvement and coach Dave Blatt was fending off questions about his job status.
It intensify more through the possession of a Pistons nuisance Timofey Mozgov, Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith.
One of the most devastating point guards in the league is Kyrie Irving. While LeBron James is still the finest player on the world.
“They did a great job during the season of complementing their three stars. The move for Mozgov, I thought, was huge more than anything to anchor their defense, and I thought their move with New York really helped them.
“J.R. Smith is a perfect fit here and has played his role very well as well as Shumpert, who gives them defense off the bench, shoots the three, and those guys provide a lot of space for James and Irving to create, and they’re two of the best creators in the league,” Van Gundy said.
