Cannabis nowadays, is not just considered the recreational “weed”of yesteryears, but it has found its niche in the medical world. About 50 varieties of Israeli cannabis are being studied by scientist, along with its effects on 200 various cancer cells.
Aside from its therapeutic properties on certain diseases, cannabis can also have responsive properties, says the Israeli researchers at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology), Haifa who conducted an extensive research on the healing attributes of the plant.
Assistant professor of biology at the Technion, Dr. David Meiri, is leading the research team. Began a year ago, the project is fixated on the cell division and cytoskeleton in healthy and cells with cancer.
Meiri explained to Haaretz, “There is a large body of scientific data which indicates that cannabinoids specifically inhibit cancer cell growth and promote cancer cell death. In addition to active cannabinoids, cannabis plants also contain a multitude of other therapeutic agents, such as terpenoids and flavonoids that are usually present in small quantities, but can have beneficial therapeutic effects, especially as synergistic compounds to cannabinoids.”
Meiri together with his colleagues were able to succeed in effecting cancer cells accountable for brain cancer to “commit suicide” and also have discovered comparable results in breast cancer cells,
Meiri and his colleagues hope to find other cancer cells, which would react the same way, from there.
Currently, scientists are studying more or less 50 different diversities of cannabis produced in Israel and its probable effect on 200 various types of cancer cells.
Dr. Meiri said it was too early to draw definitive conclusions, despite these promising results.
