The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention found in their recent study that packaged and processed foods in grocery stores contain the highest in sodium level and is blamed responsible for American’s salt intake more than it’s needed. Nearly 80% of the uncontrolled high amount of salt intake is associated with the consumption of packaged and processed foods from the grocery stores.
Exactly 77% of overconsumption in saltis from eating restaurant meals, take-out food and other packaged foods that contain high amount of salt. Home cooked meals are much preferable since it has lesser amount of salt that is beneficial to the body.
An alarming truth surfaced when CDC was looking through the leading cause of high blood pressure. It has been known that high salt intake could definitely cause high blood pressure and other health issues. For years this prompted the public health authorities to support public awareness on minimizing its consumption in packaged and processed foods.
“Americans consume an average of 3,500 milligrams (mg) of sodium each day (excluding salt added at the table). But the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day. About six in 10 adults should further limit sodium to 1,500 mg a day,” CDC had said.
CDC thought that high blood pressure may be likely connected with the geographical location of an individual. A further survey was then made to determine whether the amount of salt content in packaged foods would also depend on the location where they are being sold.
Their study came out with a result that there is no connection between high salt content and the packaged processed food products from other areas with high number of hypertensive people compared to the national average.
“Although most of the regional differences found did not have a clear direction or contributor, some may relate to regional variations in the popularity of specific types of products within a food category, CDC had said.
The most harmful food products as mentioned by the CDC include pasta and meat. These two were discovered to consist severely high levels of sodium which is beyond the required amount set by the federal body.
