(Here’s one for Ripley. Remember him, the guy from Believe it or Not? Yes, he’s highly credible and more people believe him than not.
I’m referring to the neuroscientist Sergio Canavero of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group in Italy. He has this notion that the time has come for transplanting heads. He’s planning to make known his head exchange venture during the annual conference of the American academy of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgeons (AANOS) in Annapolis, Maryland, this June.
His ambition has met a lot of ridicule this week after announcing it. His critics said it’s both unethical and scientifically impossible.
If we may just listen to him, I think the venerable doctor may have a point after all. He’s not trying to use the head of a handsome guy or beautiful ladies to improve the look of those whose face only their mother can love. He has a nobler calling such as extending the lives of people whose muscles have generated away and have become useless.
What the trailblazing doctor wants to do is not feasible at the moment but who knows what in the future.
.The head is connected to the spinal cord. It’s not only difficult is humanly impossible to do it. If there’s a way to do it, the technique could have helped a lot of people who are now paralyzed to get cured.
Dr. Canavero’s claims to the contrary is medicine so advance that it knows how to utilize stem cells or growth factors for that matter.Transferring the head from one body to another would require practically huge amounts of immunoseppresants to do it. The infection would be too much to deal with. Heart and kidney transplants sometimes become unsuccessful because the immune suppressants end up damaging the transplanted organs.
Other side effects of massive immunosuppressant doses include cancer, infections and premature death brought about by the toxicity of the immunosuppressant drugs.
(Trying it with face transplants have even met more rejections and the results pathetic.
Head transplant is ethically immoral and nobody has done it yet except in the movies. The head contains the brain and that’s what makes it even more formidable.
