Bob Dylan didn’t even sing a single song, yet the folk rock singer-writer was the star of the MusiCares Person of the Year a 2015 all-star gala concert last Friday night. The gala concert was altogether held in recognition for his achievement as a legendary rock singer-writer icon. The event took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center’s vast spread of the West Hall.
The balladeer was the center of attention, the star of all the stars that night as all the other distinguished performers like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Beck, Jack White and many other prominent music personalities with the special appearance of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
Dylan had years been nowhere to be seen from show business for more than a decade until that night when finally at 73 he was suddenly the center of everyone’s attention.
He made a speech about music, his life, his career, his artistic inspirations his critics and others. He delivered it the same way he did with his songs showing tenderness, expressiveness describing the distinctive nature of his ageless songs.
He was not the kind who made speeches in public that long revealing things about himself, his art and inspirations. He sang to complement those he adored and faced criticism at those who had angered him.
It was a successful night filled with surprises that delighted everybody especially when Dylan was absent for almost two hours during the music performances just before he was to deliver his speech. Dylan appeared before the crowd and banished those misconceptions about himself telling exactly what he really is and what he has gone through all those years. The audience of 3,000 were mostly amazed and pleased including the Oscar-winning celebrities from Jeff Bridges to Lady Gaga.
The speech that Dylan delivered started by expressing his gratitude to MusiCares, a nonprofit wing of the Record Academy which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The goal of MusiCares is to help the music members of the music community when they are in need for medical and financial support in time of emergencies.
