The first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis saw Butler wielded the upset axe on the nation’s number 6 team North Carolina 74-66 to advance in the next round in a smashing fashion.
Senior Alex Barlow scattered 17 points while Kelan Martin came off the bench with 17 to spearhead the undefeated Butler’s kingsize upset.
The victory improved Butler’s win-loss record to 4-0 and will face the winner between UCLA-Oklahoma tussle on Thursday. The North Carolina skidded with a 3-1 record.
The victory marks the second time in three years that the Bulldogs had beaten the Tar Heels in a regular season tourney. The Bulldogs also registered a riveting win in November 2012.
The Tar Heels led at halftime 35-32, but Bulldogs’ intense and relentless rebounding made the difference in the game. The Bulldogs outrebounded their heftier and taller rivals 57-40, 29 of which came from the offensive end to compensate for their not so impressive 30% shooting clip.
Spitfire Alex Barlow sizzles as held the preseason player of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference to only 18 points. Barlow’s relentless defense held Paige’s to just 5-17 shooting and only managed to one attempt in the crucial last two minutes of the game.
Another Butler player sparkled as Roosevelt Jones chipped in 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists for Butler.
