Great skateboarding games aren’t easy to find on your smartphone or tablet, but we’ve gotten two new ones in as many weeks with Transworld Endless Skater and the recently released Epic Skater. The latter comes from some of the folks that worked on Tony Hawk 2, and we’re here to give the lowdown on the game.
If you’re expecting Epic Skater to follow in the footsteps of the old Tony Hawk Pro Skater games, you’ll be disappointed. There are plenty of tricks to attempt, but it’s an “endless skating” type of game that keeps you on the rails both literally and figuratively. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, as ES is a game that’s going to whittle away at your free time.
The goal of the game in Epic Skater is to see how far you can make it without crashing, but you’re on a set path and that path is full of coins, ramps, rails and various obstacles. If you want to jump, you just need to tap the screen, and if you want to get a little more air under your Ollie, you’ll want to hold that tap just a bit longer. Tricks are done by swiping the screen in various directions and you can pull of a grind by jumping near a rail. Easy peasy as they say…
Your run ends when you go face-first into the pavement, but you can extend it with an energy drink. This is where the freemium aspect of the game comes into play. You don’t have to pony up to buy a soda as you get the coins you’ve earned regardless, so the IAP aspect is thankfully minimal. Oddly enough, Epic Skater coins aren’t used for any kind of unlockable board or customization – you just use them to power up your attributes like speed, trick and grinding.
Epic Skater is cartoony and simple, but extremely addictive and well put together. It’s one of those games you pick up to play for a few minutes, and before you know it, an hour or two has passed. That’s impressive considering there is no depth to the game. One area to skate through, limited tricks, and no customization would generally kill a game, but not Epic Skater. If popular enough, we could easily see the developers adding additional areas to skate through.
In a nuthsell, Epic Skater is a well worth your time and a download if you’re in the mood for a solid skating game. You can pick up Epic Skater for free on Google Play.
