Oculus Rift banned for sale in China due to resellers

Unfortunately for Chinese gamers, Oculus VR have banned the sale of the Oculus Rift in China due to extreme circumstances of reselling within the country. Oculus VR are concerned that selling in China will diminish the global supply due to this issue.

According to the company, the reselling issue within China was very extreme. As such, Oculus VR stated that some developers will not receive their Oculus Rift DK2 kits until August even with estimated shipping dates in July. This was confirmed by the company via Reddit.

Oculus VR officially commented on the ban. They stated, “Yes, it is a bummer that we have had to suspend sales in China due to extreme reseller purchases. We need to make sure that we are doing what we can to make sure that resellers that are looking to flip our product for a profit are not taking stock away from legitimate developer purchases globally.”

This move is understandable from both the perspective of Oculus VR and developers. It’s in the company’s best interest to get dev kits for the Oculus Rift into the hands of as many developers as possible to ensure the technology has a strong catalog of games. On the flipside, many developers will want to have their games ready for the technology as soon as possible for maximum sales.

Despite this bad news, the company did state that the virtual reality headset will return to the country once the consumer level Rift is available. Right now, Oculus VR are sending dev kits to developers around the world. The full release of the Rift will see the headset making it’s way back to China in the near future as reselling will no longer be as much of an issue.

Even though the headset is banned in China for the time being, gamers in the country are seeing more support as time progresses. After China lifted the ban on video game consoles, both Sony and Microsoft announced that the PS4 and Xbox One respectively will come to China this year.
