Ubisoft’s upcoming open world game Watch Dogs is undeniably one of the most anticipated games of 2014. Ahead of the release this Tuesday, US video game retailer GameStop has announced that 3,500 stores will be opened for a midnight release. Many of these locations will be holding parties, contests and giveaways as well as showing new footage from the game. Additionally, gamers who attend one of these midnight releases will be able to play Watch Dogs on the PS4 starting May 26 at 9 pm.
According to GameStop’s senior VP of Merchandising Bob Puzon, the game is “proving to be the highest pre-ordered next generation console game” in the company’s history, which prompted them to organize such a massive midnight release. Ubisoft stated earlier this month that Watch Dogs was the second most pre-ordered game, next gen or current gen in the history of the company. Ubisoft also stated that Watch Dogs is well on it’s way to becoming the most successful new IP in video game history, a similar claim made by Activision regarding their upcoming shooter Destiny.
Watch Dogs has been filled to the brim with pre-order bonuses, including the Palace DLC Pack which includes an additional mission and inexplicably comes with an ATM hack boost. The PS4 and PS3 versions of Watch Dogs also include 60 minutes of exclusive content. Gamestop have also supported the release of Watch Dogs with various promotions and discounts. People who purchase a PS4, Watch Dogs and a 12 month Playstation Plus subscription will save $10. In the company’s new push towards the mobile market, the purchase of Watch Dogs on any platform and a pre-owned smartphone will also result in a saving of $25.
Watch Dogs is launching worldwide on May 27 for the Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC with a Wii U version launching later this year. Reviews for the title will arrive on release day.
